Breakthrough solutions with multiple sensing capabilities are expected to innovate flow sensing and bring it to the markets such as medical, IoT, and industrial applications.

Lead-Free Solder Paste:MEMS Nano-Wire Sensor Platform to Measure Flow and Temperature

California-based Instrumems recently announced that it plans to enter the flow sensor market with a multi-sensing solution. It is the first and the only one that uses a single sensor to accurately measure flow and temperature (including extremely-low flow) sensing solutions. Instrumems also extends the capabilities of physical sensors with real-time edge computing.

Instrumems is a fabless semiconductor design company for fabless MEMS nanowire sensing platforms. The Instrumems platform supports sensor integration to measure flow, temperature, velocity, and humidity with high accuracy. Combined with advanced algorithms and software, the sensor has fast speed, high precision, small size, and low power consumption, providing a complete sensing solution.

The Instrumems' sensing platform is ideal for low-power applications requiring real-time sensing in respiratory devices, such as continuous positive airway pressure ventilation (CPAP) systems, smart inhalers, and ventilators. The multi-sensing solutions are also suitable for thermal management and instrumentation requiring accurate flow measurement. Instrumems also plans to expand support for other sensing parameters such as bubble and gas detection.

Instrumems’ multi-sensing solutions can be integrated into respiratory devices such as inhalers, ventilators, CPAP systems, spirometers, and others.

Instrumems’ vision is to provide smart sensing solutions for a variety of devices through data digitization and offer real-time flow sensing and control for applications that were not possible in the past. Previously, products requiring flow sensors faced constraints, such as dimension, battery life, cost, speed, and sensor accuracy. The latest flow sensors are often bulky, expensive, and unsuitable for consumer products or large-scale applications.

Instrumems’ breakthrough in multi-sensing technology reduces cost, power consumption, and size, enabling industrial and consumer product manufacturers to apply smart sensing solutions to additional devices. Instrumems offers an evaluation kit to demonstrate flow and temperature sensing for a variety of applications.

There are no other combined temperature and flow sensors on the market today with small size, low power, high speed, and excellent profit saving like Instrumems' multi-sensing flow solutions. Instrumems' sensing technology successfully integrates cutting-edge flow sensing solutions into scenarios that were previously unavailable due to cost, accuracy, and form factor. Giladarwatz, founder and CEO of Instrumems, said: "Our innovative sensing technology can help customers modernize, miniaturize and intelligently upgrade their products, making them more competitive and aesthetically appealing."

Instrumems’ technology originated from more than a decade of development at Princeton University. The sensors are fabricated using standard semiconductor and MEMS processes, including some unique process steps. Instrumems' sensors can measure flow, temperature, speed, and humidity through a variety of electronic techniques. The thermal mass of the sensor is small and can be measured at high frequencies from 10kHz to 100kHz. Hence, the temporal resolution is better, and the small size of the sensor element allows for a high spatial resolution.

Instrumems develops unique software and electronics, including BLE and Wi-Fi modules. The low power consumption makes it ideal for battery-powered devices. Instrumems has also developed an exclusive fluid mechanics model integrated into the algorithm that can measure different flow rates and temperatures simultaneously through a single sensor.

Instrumems' new MEMS nano-wire sensing platform is flexible and versatile, enabling flow, temperature, and humidity measurements. In addition, Instrumems is developing more sensing solutions, including carbon dioxide sensing, vacuum pressure sensing, etc.
